Five magazines for pistol and rifle are required for competitions.

Any semi-automatic rifle with a detachable box magazine chambered in .22 LR is acceptable but the RUGER 10/22 rifle is the most widely used. Tubular magazine rifles are not permitted. For rifle, there are iron sight and red dot divisions but we typically have athletes start with iron sights.

Why rimfire pistols and rifles?
Rimfire pistols and rifles are used in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) because they are generally more affordable, have lower recoil, and are suitable for younger shooters, making them ideal for youth competitions.

Why iron sights?
Youth are often started on iron sights to teach them foundational shooting skills like grip, stance, breathing, and trigger control, which are transferable to other sighting systems. Iron sights also provide a simple, durable, and less expensive introduction to aiming that builds a strong visual language for sight alignment and sight picture, fostering confidence and consistency before introducing the complexities of optics. This approach ensures a well-rounded shooter who can adapt to different sighting technologies.
